Workshop for caregivers to connect with area resources set for Oct. 11

The Neighborhood Health Association (NHA) will hold a free workshop designed to support grandparents and other kinship caregivers on Wednesday, October 11.

The program entitled “Superheroes Need Support, Too: A Resource Workshop for Grandparents and Kinship Caregivers Raising Children” will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Cedar Creek Church, South Toledo Campus, 2150 South Byrne Road, Toledo. Lunch will be provided.

“Many resources are available to help caregivers who have stepped in to help with children and adults in need,” said Monica Morales, project coordinator for NHA. “We developed this workshop to give caregivers one place to learn about many different types of help available to them. It’s about supporting someone who is giving of themselves.”

The workshop will address not only the needs of those who have stepped in to help with children but also adults, such as aging parents or those with disabilities.

“When children are in need and someone known to them steps in, it has a huge impact on positive outcomes,” said Doni Miller, CEO of NHA. “For those who are caring for adults, techniques on caring for yourself while caring for another are particularly important to reduce negative health outcomes for the caregiver.”

The keynote speaker will be retired Lucas County Juvenile Judge Connie Zemmelman, who will discuss the legal terrain of being a kinship caregiver.

Representatives from local support agencies, including the Area Office on Aging, Lucas County Children Services, and NAMI Greater Toledo will lead working sessions on various topics. Each session will help caregivers learn what resources are available and how to receive that assistance. Caregivers can choose sessions that address their caregiving situation.

Sessions will cover topics including self-care, community benefit support services, the Kinship Navigator Program, mental and physical healthcare and social services.
