Fire dept. issues safety tips

Trick or Treat is Oct. 31

The Village of Holland, and Springfield Township have set Trick or Treat for Tuesday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Springfield Township Fire Department has issued Halloween safety tips for trick or treaters.

“There are many ways to keep your child safe during Halloween,” Fire Chief Barry Cousino said. “Here are a few safety tips for those planning to trick or treat this year.”

•Young children should be accompanied by an adult, a responsible sibling, or in groups of more than two people. Trick-or-treating areas selected children about the importance of not entering homes or vehicles without your permission.

•When selecting a costume, choose one labeled “flame resistant.” Costumes should be light and bright to be seen by motorists. Parents also can trim costumes with reflective tape or use glowsticks as an additional way to increase visibility.

Costumes should be well-fitting to the child. Avoid those that will create trip or falling hazards. If a mask is chosen, be sure the eye holes are large enough to allow for good visibility and not restrict breathing. Carry a flashlight.

•Warn children not to eat any treats before they are examined by an adult. Have your child eat a good dinner to reduce the temptation of snacking due to hunger.

•People expecting trick or treaters should eliminate obstacles from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jacko- lanterns should be kept away from landings, porches and steps. Caution also should be taken while decorating indoors for potential fire hazards.
