Voters okay fire, school levies

State issues pass

Holland-Springfield area residents are among Lucas County voters in Tuesday’s general election who supported two state issues–one, the abortion and reproductive amendment and two, cannabis initiative.

Countywide totals for Issue 1 were 74,892 for and 42,452 against; and Issue 2, 70,943 for and 45,205 against.

Issue 2 passed by 2,183,723 (57 percent) for and 1,649,384 (43 percent) against.

Statewide, the total votes cast for Issues 1 and 2 were 3,862,690 and 3,833,118 respectively. Levies Voters also approved two levies. The Springfield Township 4.4-mill fire renewal levy passed with 6,024 in favor and 2,377 against.

Springfield Local Schools also saw their 2.25-mill operations levy pass by a vote of 5,693 for and 3,697 against.

Candidates

Springfield Township will have a new fiscal office next year. Incumbent Barbara Dietze, 1,849 votes, was defeated by challenger Rachel Geiger, 4,429.

At Sylvania Municipal Court, current judge Michael Bonfiglio received 14,781 votes compared to Meira Zucker, 10,344.

Vote totals for unopposed candidates were:

•Springfield Township trustee, Andy Glenn, 6,298.

•Holland mayor, Ryan Spangler, 417.

•Holland Village Council, Justin Hoen, 370; Scott Brown and Sandy Hensley won as write in candidates.

With the retirement of Councilman Roger Burditt this year, the village will have an additional open seat on council entering 2024.

•Springfield board of education, Kenneth Musch, 6,058.

•ESC of Lake Erie West, Brent Buehrer, 18,655, and Thomas Ilstrup, 14,894.

•ESC Wood County, Kathy Limes, 284, and Joseph Long, 301.
