Village celebrates Happy Holland Days

Area residents turned out on a misty December 2 to celebrate a community tradition, Happy Holland Days. The event featured storytime and arts and crafts activities at the Holland Branch Library. In addition, students from Penta’s cosmetology program offered face painting and hair tinseling, both a hit with youngsters and adults alike. At 4:30 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived via a holidaylighted vintage firetruck at the library. From there, they boarded a decorated utility vehicle for a short trip to the Lodge at Strawberry Acres, where the couple were greeted by Holland Mayor Lee Irons and his wife, Barb. At the lodge, children visited with Santa, took part in a coloring contest and enjoyed milk and cookies. The day concluded with Christmas music by the Springfield High School band and the lighting of the tree by the mayor with help from children. The tree was adorned in red, white and blue lights in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the village and National Christmas Tree. The first national tree was lit on Christmas Eve 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge. More photos will appear in the December 15 issue of the Journal.
