At Holland Village Council’s January 2 meeting, a new mayor and councilwoman were sworn into office as well as two other councilmen.
Mayor Ryan Spangler, formerly council president, was administered the oath of office by Village Solicitor Paul Skaff.
Afterward. Mr. Skaff swore in new Councilwoman Sandy Hensley and returning Councilmen Scott Brown and Justin Hoen. All four will serve four-year terms.
Mayor Spangler then announced committee appointments for council members and citizens.
He pointed out that there are some openings due to a vacancy on council, which occurred when then Mr. Spangler was elected mayor in November.
He also noted that in the past, a member of council would serve as chair on each committee, but that designation will now fall to village Administrator Bob Bethel.
The following are council appointments:
•Public Safety–Councilman Scott Brown.
•Insurance– vacant.
•Parks–Councilman Justin Hoen.
•Planning Commission– Councilman Nate Gaubert.
•Utilities Regulation and Deregulation, Recycling and Refuse, Grants–Ms. Hensley.
•Maintenance, Streets, Buildings–Councilman Mike Bettinger.
Committee appointments are:
•Building–Mayor Spangler, Mr. Bettinger and Mr. Hoen, maintenance supervisor Brian Yunker, and residents Ed Thurman, Brian Harbert and Rob Wielinski.
•Budget/Finance/Audit –Mayor Spangler, Mr. Gaubert, Mr. Brown, Clerk/ Treasurer Lyn Krasula and resident Ed Stuart.
•CRA Council with terms expiring January 2025– Harold French and Ms. Hensley, appointed by the mayor; Mr. Hoen and Sandy Almond, appointed by council; Ed Stuart and Russel Ryan, appointed by all, and Craig Fischer, appointed by plan commission.
•Economic Development– Mayor Spangler and Mr. Gaubert.

Other Business
In other business, council: •Elected Mr. Brown as council president.
•Announced the open seat on village council. Interested residents should contact the village at 419-865-7104 for more information. The appointment is through December 31, 2025.
•Renewed the police software contract for the records management system with Central Square for $5,579.
•Agreed to proceed with the advertisement of bids for a large dump truck for the maintenance department.
•Authorized spending limits for council that reflect a $500 increase. Council’s limit is now $2,500 and the mayor, $7,500.
•Heard from Mayor Spangler that the Toledo Lucas County Public Library is planning to expand the Holland Branch, which will require the library to obtain additional land at the adjacent Strawberry Acres Park.
Mr. Bethel said they are planning to expand the branch by about 50 feet to the north.
Council’s next meeting is at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, at village hall, 1245 Clarion Avenue, and is open to the public.
