OHP reminds drivers to be prepared for winter weather

The Ohio Highway Patrol reminds travelers to drive safely in winter to reduce the risk of being involved in a crash.

Winter weather can change quickly and catch drivers off guard, said Staff Leiutenant Rick Reeder, OHP liaison.

To arrive safely, Governor Mike DeWine encourages motorists to check weather forecasts and plan accordingly prior to driving.

“Planning, patience and preparation are key to driving in winter weather,” he said.

Ohio law requires headlights to be on when windshield wipers are in use.

“If your vehicle gets stuck in snow, clear the tailpipe free of snow and debris to decrease the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning,” Lt. Reeder said.

Colonel Charles Jones, patrol superintendent, is urging motorists to use extra caution, slow down and drive appropriately for the conditions. “Drivers should increase their following distance, be patient and remain calm while driving in inclement weather,” he said.

Motorists should carry a winter car kit that includes an ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, warning devices, blankets, cell phone charger, first aid kit, tow rope and water/food for longer trips.

“Also, examine your tires for proper tread depth, check the battery and keep the windshield washer reservoir full,” said Col. Jones, adding, “If your vehicle breaks down or you are involved in a crash, turn on your hazard lights, move your vehicle as far off the roadway as possible, remain in the vehicle, and dial 911 or #677 in Ohio.”

He advises anyone traveling in winter weather to visit OHGO for real-time traffic updates and conditions from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
