County engineer’s office receives grant for roundabout

The Lucas County engineer’s office has been awarded a federal grant for construction of a new roundabout at Bancroft Street and King Road in Sylvania and Springfield townships.

The project will involve removal of the existing traffic signal at the intersection, updated drainage, sidewalks and construction of a roundabout.

Part of the County Engineer’s Association of Ohio’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, the goal is to fund projects that significantly reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on all public roadways.

It requires a data-driven, strategic approach to planning safety improvements that correct or improve an identified road, intersection or bridge. These can include a road improvement, reconfiguration or relocation, widening, road safety tools like rumble strips and skid-resistant surfaces and installation of a traffic calming feature.

The grant carries with it a matching 20 percent requirement with 80 percent of the total cost covered by federal funds and the remainder by the local agency.

“We are pleased to once again receive federal funds for the construction a new roundabout,” Lucas County Engineer Mike Pniewski said. “As an intersection with an elevated level of serious and fatal accidents, we are proud in implementing this measure to increase safety and improve traffic flow on our roadways.”

“I congratulate the county engineer in being awarded federal safety funding for a new roundabout intersection at Bancroft and King Roads,” County Commissioner Anita Lopez said. “These funds will increase safety and create jobs for our county, and we are glad to see our tax dollars keep our community moving safely.”
