Sylvania STEM Center to close after summer camps

The Sylvania STEM Center is closing after the summer camps season on August 2.

According to Tom Burnworth, executive director, financial challenges have made the long-term viability of the center no longer possible.

“This was a difficult decision, and doubly so, because of the tremendous achievements of the thousands of kids who have participated in our programming,” he said.

“Despite lofty goals, the hard decisions surrounding our future became clear over the last few weeks and the board determined closure to be the best way to support the future of STEM in the area and maintain integrity with our kids, parents and donors,” he added.

While disappointed about the closure, he said the board of directors believes the center made a positive impact on area children and the community since its inception in 2011.

“It is essential to acknowledge the significant achievements and the lasting, positive influence SSC will have. Feelings about the closure are natural, but it’s equally important to recognize the dedication and hard work that went into creating a space where so many young minds could thrive and explore STEM fields,” Burnworth said. “Your support over the years has had a positive impact on countless individuals and is something to be proud of.”

He encourages the community to continue supporting other STEM initiatives or find new ways to continue making a difference.
