The City of Toledo, in collaboration with the University of Toledo and the Human Relations Commission, is proud to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. The theme for the 23rd Unity Day Celebration is “I AM the Dream.”
Dr. King’s message of non-violence and his efforts to promote racial equality continue to inspire people around the world to work towards creating a more just and equal society. Residents are invited to attend a weekend of thought provoking events, keynote speakers and community activities.
On Friday, January 12, the MLK Experience will kick off with open-mic and poetry night at Lucille’s Jazz Lounge. The theme is Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop. Doors open at 7:15 and performances will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are available in the range of $10 to $32.
On Saturday, January 13, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host their MLK scholarship breakfast to commemorate the achievements of the college scholarship awardees. Space is limited.
Sunday, January 14, is a day for rest, rejoicing, and restoration at the place of your choosing.
On Monday, January 15, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., join the Human Relations Commission and the University of Toledo for a Unity Day Celebration hosted by Alexis Means. The event will be virtual and streamed on Toledo’s Facebook page, BCAN and the university’s website.
The keynote speaker, Rosa Clemente, an influential organizer, independent journalist, producer and scholar activist, will highlight the event. Ms. Clemente is renowned for her activism and advocacy in the Black-Latinx community. She is the first Afro-Latina woman to run for vice-president in 2008.

On Monday, January 15, the Toledo Museum of Art will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a gathering place to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Guests may enjoy a full day of free programs and artwork that celebrate Black artists and culture including Silent Hip Hop to celebrate the MLK Experience.
