Last week was Start with Hello Week. This program teaches students in grades K through 12 to help their peers in a fun and meaningful way. They take small but powerful actions to promote inclusion and to support students who are showing signs of loneliness or social isolation.

All staff should make the extra effort to say hello to students and help them feel loved and included at Holloway.

Each day last week had a theme to promote friendliness and inclusion.

Monday: Hey Day—students were provided with name tags and encouraged to say hi to people in the school by using their name.

Tuesday: Classroom Acts of Kindness—classrooms were paired together to complete an act of kindness for, or with, one another. This could be writing cards for the residents at the nursing home nearby, reading a book together or writing positive notes to one another.

Wednesday: Cups and Compliments—students learned how to give a compliment, and wrote them on the cup of a partner (cups/lemonade were provided). For younger students, they practiced saying the compliment out loud instead of writing.

Thursday: Embrace Diversity—students brought something from home that represented their identity (picture of family, a special item their family has passed down, a recipe they make, talk about a holiday they celebrate, etc) and shared it with the class.

Friday: Friendship Fri-YAY—students wore school colors, read a book about being a friend, and talked about the qualities of a person who includes others.
