Springfield High School News

Sometimes it is absolutely amazing what happens within a week of school. This week has been extremely busy and leading into one of the busiest weeks of the year. I just wanted to share a few things about this week and then my excitement for this upcoming week. Homecoming week is a lot of fun for kids and, as I’ve said before, stressful for administrators.

First, a little bit about this past week. The week saw so many big things. We’ve had several senior nights, the boys soccer team won another league championship, girls soccer and volleyball both had great wins. During the football game we had the recognition of our state runner-up softball team and middle school band night. Our N.L.L. cross-country meet saw one of the Blue Devils make the first team. Congrats, David. The band was recognized with Chick-fil-A for outstanding band of the week and then had their annual band showcase and performed the entire show they will be taking to state. So many things and, I know, I have not touched on them all. With all these events though, our students continue to work hard in the classroom and that is what I’m most proud. With all of the outside events we celebrate, I forget sometimes to recognize the hard work in the classroom. Last week, our midterm numbers came back very good. I’m very pleased with where most of our students stand at this point.

Our teachers have done a good job and I want to encourage parents to continue to have those conversations with students about academics. All the things that I named above are so much fun, but none of them are as important as success in the classroom. And sometimes that can get lost in all the different events and especially in homecoming week.

Which brings me to this week. This week we have so many fun things planned and I’m very excited for all the kids and all that they’re going to get to do. I want to remind parents, though, to help kids through the excitement and drama of the week. Sometimes kids can get distracted to the point where they are forgetting what’s most important, academics and enjoying being young.

This week have those conversations with your child and encourage them to do the dress-up days and participate in the assemblies, but do it the right way. Remind them that everything’s got to be school-appropriate and that what we do here for fun to enjoy being a kid is not more important than the academics in the classroom. Remind our students that during AEI class, get your homework done so that you can have some fun after school and do the homecoming events.

This week, there’s going to be lots of things going on and I hope our students enjoy every moment of it and stay focused on why we’re all here. To all, have a great homecoming week and parents, please, talk to your kids about being safe and making great choices and enjoying being a young person.
