Village council recognizes Holland’s female leaders

Female leaders of Holland throughout the village’s first 100 years were recognized by council at the March 21 meeting. They are Mabel Hovey, the first mayor, and council women Gladys Caulkins, Joanne Leonard, Patricia Kaiser, Mary Visco, Sandy Burditt, Heather Eppard, Helen Darrah, Elaine Olsen and Bonnie Ostrander.

County lends financial assistance to Toledo summer concert series

To continue the summer concert series in downtown Toledo this year, the Lucas County commissioners approved the allocation of $100,000. At the March 14 meeting, the commissioners agreed to help ProMedica continue the summer entertainment at Promenade Park, contending that the concerts “attract tens of thousands to the downtown riverfront each summer, stimulating robust economic activity.” ProMedica has had to scale back its funding for the program and has, as a result, cut the series in half from eight to four acts this summer and seek alternate sources of funding.

Kodiak Ridge exhibit opens at Toledo Zoo

Visitors to the Toledo Zoo on March 16 were entertained and enthralled with the zoo’s newest exhibit, Kodiak Ridge. The 14,000-square-foot space is home to three bears–sisters Cody and Montana, grizzly bears orphaned in 2015 at Yellowstone National Park, and Dodge, a Kodiak bear from Alaska. Dodge is by far the biggest at more than 1,000 pounds, whereas Cody is 575 pounds and her sister Montana weighs in at 615.

County road projects begin in April with roundabout

The Lucas County engineer’s office kicks off the 2023 construction season on Monday, April 3, with a new roundabout at Brint and Centennial roads in Sylvania Township. The project was awarded to Crestline Paving and Excavating of Toledo, and is expected to take 45 days to complete.

Christ Child Society launches hygiene project

The Christ Child Society of Toledo is launching a new hygiene project. Developed over the past three months, this project will provide personal hygiene products to students in grades 4 through 8 at CCS Partners in Learning elementary schools: Gesu, Queen of Apostles, Hope Learning Academy, Rosary Cathedral and St. Patrick of Heatherdowns.

Thank you to all of the staff and students who wore orange last week to kick off our character trait for March–leadership.
