Editor’s Note: The following piece was submitted regarding the retirement departure of Kristina White, Springfield Local Schools community liaison for more than 24 years. In a world of quick sound bites and fast everything, a certain catchphrase from 1968 has defied time and still resonates today to describe that undeniable person who defines the word legend.
Several arrested in connection with break-in at Community Homecoming Park concessions

A break-in at the concessions building at Community Homecoming Park in Springfield Township has resulted in the arrest of five people, including one adult and another as young as 10. At the August 14 meeting, Administrator Mike Hampton informed the trustees about the break-in and presented footage from recently installed security cameras that showed the suspects gaining entry to the building and ransacking it.

With the school year beginning this week, school board received an update on preparations. At the August 22 meeting, Superintendent Matt Geha, said the high school cafeteria, which has been undergoing renovations throughout the summer, will be ready to serve students.

A Springfield Township trustee is running unopposed while the fiscal officer is facing a challenger in the November 7 general election. The Lucas County Board of Elections posted the slate of candidates countywide, and residents had until August 9 to submit petitions for local offices.
Ruby‐throated hummingbirds to depart region for the winter

This ruby-throated hummingbird will only be in the area for a little longer before heading south for the winter. Typically, adult males–only the adult males have the ruby throats that give the species its name–depart before the females and the juvenile males hatched this year.

180th Fighter Wing to host 5K run/walk

The 180th Fighter Wing will host the second annual Stinger 5K run/walk at the 180th Fighter Wing, 660 Eber Road, Swanton, at 9 a.m., Sunday, September 10. The one-of-a-kind event features a route that includes a start/finish at the 9/11 Memorial, running past the fighter wing flightline, down the taxiway and runway.
