Annual 5K benefiting Family House, May 20

There’s No Place Like Home 5K, a timed run and walk fund-raiser for the Family House homeless shelter, is set for Saturday, May 20. All ages and ability levels are welcome, and will receive a medal and complimentary snacks after the event.

Monclova fire chief retires

After leading the Monclova Township fire department for 31 years, Monclova Township Fire Chief Kevin Bernhard retired, effective April 30. Chief Bernhard began his fire service career like most of the township’s firefighters as a volunteer and became a full-time fire fighter in March 1995.

Jazz and Art festival issues call for artists

The annual Sunset Jazz and Art Festival, sponsored by the Grand Rapids Arts Council, is planned for Sunday, August 13, from 2 p.m. until sunset. It will be held along the towpath of the Maumee River in Grand Rapids.

Tree Toledo, now in its ninth year of operation to mitigate climate change by encouraging tree planting, will distribute free tree seedlings from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, May 13, at Ohlman’s Farm Market, 3901 Hill Avenue, Toledo.

Springfield Sprint draws walkers, runners of all ages

Last month, the Springfield High School Academic Boosters and cross country team held their annual 5K run/walk, Springfield Sprint. Coordinated by Cheri Copeland-Shull of the boosters and cross country Coach Mike Shull, the event benefited both groups. More than 30 runners braved the early morning elements and were rewarded with the sun breaking through the clouds just as the run got underway.
